All You Need To Know About Blogging

How To Overcome Procrastination In 4 Easy Steps…Tomorrow.

Posted by User ImageTom | January 4, 2009 | Posted in: Emotions | Comments (27)

If you have been reading this blog for even a short period of time, then I am sure that you would have heard me say at least once that I get distracted VERY easily. In fact if procrastination were an olympic sport, I would have a very good shot at Gold!

Here are a few Procrastination Quotes for your entertainment!
(If you are disciplined in time-management just skip to the main points to save time.)

It is an undoubted truth, that the less one has to do, the less time one finds to do it in. ~Earl of Chesterfield

There’s nothing to match curling up with a good book when there’s a repair job to be done around the house. ~Joe Ryan

You know you are getting old when it takes too much effort to procrastinate. ~Author Unknown

Ok, let’s get back on track, but for those of you who liked the procrastination quotes I have added one more to each of the blogs points.

One of the things (I don’t want to say New Years Resolutions, because everyone breaks them) that I have decided to work on in 2009 is to overcome procrastination. I want to finish things I start and get to the end of a day and be happy with all the work that I have done.

So I have come up with 4 easy steps that I will follow (and you can too) on:

How To Overcome Procrastination

  1. Plan Your Day

    plan your day

  2. The sooner I fall behind, the more time I have to catch up. ~ Author Unknown

This is something that I started to do a bit during December and I was getting great results.

At the beginning of each day (well the ones I remembered), I would write a list of all the things I wanted to get done with my blogs that day.

Here is a list from one of the days:

    daily to do list

As you will see, I completed everything on that list, including 3 blog posts, dropping 300 entrecards and transferring a website. Obviously I got more than this done, but these were the things that I wanted to do (that I usually wouldn’t).

Obviously this is the first step on how to overcome procrastination!

The idea is to make a list of all the things that you NEED to get done, and then also create another list of the things that you would LIKE to get done.

  3. Remove Distractions

remove distrations from your work space

  4. Anyone can do any amount of work, provided it isn’t the work he is supposed to be doing at that moment. ~ Robert Benchley

Some people may be able to multi-task and be able to work as well as have the TV on, listen to music, answer emails, chat on msn and play games - BUT for the serial procrastinator this is just not possible.

Too many colours. Too much noise. In other words - TOO MANY DISTRACTIONS that seem way to inviting compared to what we are supposed to be doing. So work now - play later. Something that I did was set myself some goals. Once I completed 3 of my goals I could stop and watch tv for 30 min, or after completing each task I could check my emails.

Not only did I get a lot more work done, I found myself becoming less addicted to my websites statistics and my emails! (Because we all know that way to many internet marketers check their email and website stats a little too often!)

  5. Be Accountable

    be accountable

  6. Procrastination is opportunity’s assassin. ~Victor Kiam

Procrastination is a problem that can sometimes be a bit to hard to break yourself. So if you struggle with getting things done even after you write a list then it might be a good idea to share your ‘to do list’ with someone.

This way they are able to hold you accountable for getting your work done by checking with you during the day to see how you are going.

I have never actually tried this method for myself but I know that if you have someone constantly checking up on you then you are more likely to get things done (think of when your mum kept bugging you about that homework you had due!)

  7. Start Now

    start work now

  8. “The greatest amount of wasted time is the time not getting started.” ~ Dawson Trotman

One of the serial procrastinators most frequent sayings would most likely be: ‘I’ll do tomorrow!’

So kick the habit now, and start planning tomorrow - today! Go on, I dare you too!

So just wondering… who else is ready to kick procrastination?

10 Things Climbing A Mountain Taught Me About Goals

Posted by User ImageTom | December 29, 2008 | Posted in: Blog Goals | Comments (44)

I was a bit bored today so I sent an SMS to my friend asking him if he was up for some exercise. I gave him two options:

  • Tennis
  • Mountain Climbing

He chose mountain climbing, and we decided climb Mount Tibrogargan and arrived at the foot of the mountain at 1:45pm. With a recommended climb time of 3 hours we knew for sure we would be back down before dark - so we set off.

As we climbed and we struggled against things like the scorching heat and poor fitness I started thinking about how much climbing a mountain has in common with accomplishing our goals. So I decided to share them with you - and include a few pictures from our climb (using my new Sanyo Xacti Camera)

  1. Know Your Target
    know your target
When we were deciding which mountain to climb, I told Cody (my friend) that I wanted a challenge, so he decided to suggest Mount Tibrogargan which as you can read on the sign above ‘Is for experience climbers only’.Knowing that this climb would challenge me, I decided to do a bit of research before we left. I found out how high the mountain was and how long the climb was estimated to take. I needed to know these facts to make sure that we would have enough time to complete the climb - I needed to know what we were up against.

It is exactly the same with blogging. As each new challenge or goal comes our way, the first thing we need to do is ‘Know Our Opponent’ - just like we had to know the mountain we were climbing and a sportsman or team needs to study their opponents. We need to know our goals and where we are heading.

I Need People To Review My New Blog Design Before It’s Coded….

Posted by User ImageTom | December 26, 2008 | Posted in: My Blog Projects | Comments (24)

If you read ‘My Goals For StandOutBlogger In 2009‘ post, you would have noticed that one of my goals was:

I will redesign SOB by the end of July 2009, to increase conversion and monetization, while making it easier for visitors to find and read information.

Well I capped out our broadband internet for the month yesterday so I’m currently on 56k til the 1st of January - so I decided to make a start on achieving my first goal before the year even starts (is that cheating? :P).

I have currently designed the majority of the index page and the individual post page, and a very select few have already had a preview - but now I want to open it up to a little bit larger of a focus group to help me fine tune the design so that it has everything that a ‘Stand Out’ blog needs.

But I’m Not Posting Pictures Here

I have a couple of reason for not wanting to show everyone at the moment, and here are the main reason:

  • To Many People, Too Many Opinions
If I post pictures here, I will get a lot of people looking at my initial concepts and each will have their own opinions. I would rather have a select few regular readers - who I know will give me feedback that is in the best interest of StandOutBlogger.
  • Preview Now, No Buzz Later
If I show everyone the design now, when it is finally completed (which could be another month or so) there will be no surprise and no buzz regarding the new design.

So How Do You Get A Preview?

Well sometime tomorrow (Sunday), I will be emailing the design concepts to the subscribers of StandOutBlogger Underground. Currently 50 people will be getting a preview of my new blog design - as well as my reasoning and thoughts on designing a blog theme that ’stands out’.

Would You Give Me Your Feedback?

If you would like to preview my new blog concept for StandOutBlogger, and give me your highly valued feedback, then please subscribe to StandOutBlogger Underground before Sunday!

What’s Your Favourite Blog Theme Feature?

I absolutely love looking at blog designs, and the different features that each of them have! I have seen a whole heap of creative ideas (some of which I have tried to impliment into the new design), and I think it would be great if you could comment with your favourite blog design feature on a blog that you have seen.

Let me give you an example:

One thing I think is an extremely good idea for converting new readers into RSS or email list subscribers is to have a reminder to subscribe at the bottom of each post. This way they have just read your great content and are more likely to subscribe that just by seeing a button in your sidebar.

Check out the following blogs posts page to see some great examples:

Anyway, feel free to share your favourite blog theme feature…

My Goals For StandOutBlogger in 2009

Posted by User ImageTom | December 23, 2008 | Posted in: Blog Goals | Comments (55)

smart goal setting

If you have read my last post: SMART Goal Setting For 2009, where I look at SMART as an anagram that provides you with the keys to creating goals that will motivate you, then you may have also noticed the comment left by BE Folks:

This is first post i read regarding new year’s resolution and goals. hope u have set up your goals already. wish you successes!!!

Well to be completely honest - No I hadn’t!

But over the last couple of days, I have taken the time to think about where I see SOB heading over the next 12 months and what I want to acheive. So I have decided to list them here for a couple of reason:

  1. So You Know What To Expect
I don’t treat my visitors as customers that I just try and flog any product to in the hope of snagging myself a commission. I value the relationships I have built through this blog and I’d prefer to think of you all as part of the StandOutBlogger family!

So, since you are now part of the family, I wanted to let you know where we are heading so you can know what to expect over the coming 12 months -and hopefully if you havn’t already, it will encourage you to subscribe so you don’t miss a minute of it! Because it will be exciting!!!

  2. To Keep Me Accountable
I could easily write up some goals and keep them to myself, but where is the accountability? I have found when I have done this I will get to the end of the period of time, not be anywhere near meeting my goals and when somebody would ask me how my goals went, I’d reply, ‘Yea good, I think I hit most of them’. (Just being honest)

Putting my goals out in the open, where you all can see - and check back on when I post my results at the end of next year, will make sure there is no, ‘Yea good, I think I hit most of them’. Instead I will have to give exact answers.

  3. To Keep Me Motivated
Some people don’t seem to get motivated by written goals, but this is usually because they are not written in the right way. If you stick to the SMART goal setting formula you are sure to come away with goals that will keep you pumped all year long!

I am the type of person that gets sidetracked really (i mean REALLY) easily, and I lose drive for a project just as quick - so staying motivated is always one of my biggest challenges, but I am sure these goals will have me excited :D (You will be too when you read them!)

StandOutBlogger Goals For 2009

I have categorise my goals into 4 categories:

  • Statistics
This will be were I set goals for all the typical ways bloggers seem to measure themselves by. Including RSS, Technorati, Alexa and unique visitors.
  • Product
This will look at goals I set that are ways to piggyback off the blogs success. So I will look at StandOutBlogger Underground and product creation.
  • Profit
While I havn’t really focused on making money from SOB in the last 6 months (I still have though), I think it’s about time I get a little bit more serious about it. I will not only set a monetary figure, but also be creating goals on the methods I will use to make that money.

So I’ll stop stalling and get straight into my goals for 2009…

Statistic Goals

rss count image

  • RSS Subscribers (Current 718) Goal: 2,500
  • Alexa (Current 110,050) Goal: 60,000
  • Technorati (18,103) Goal: 10,000
  • Unique Visitors (Between 280-380/day) Goal: 1,000

I will increase my statistics to the goals I have set above by the end of 2009 by the following techniques:

  • Creating At Least 3 Quality Posts Per Week
  • Continually Adding To The Feeds In My Feed Reader When I Find Blogs That I Enjoy Reading - And Commenting Each Of Their New Posts That I Believe I Can Add Value Too.
  • Focus on SEO, and building search engine traffic by having SE friendly titles, and keyword density.
  • Providing a unique voice that visitors cannot find elsewhere.

I Aim To Build My Statistics To Meet The Above Goals For The Purpose Of:

  • Increasing my influence and reach by expanding my my daily reader base.

I will gain new readers using the following methods:

  • Information Product

SMART Goal Setting For 2009

Posted by User ImageTom | December 16, 2008 | Posted in: Blog Goals | Comments (26)

smart goals

As we get set to welcome in 2009, we also must stop and take note of what we are looking to achieve in this coming year. Setting goals is one of the biggest keys to succeeding in any area of life and blogging is no exception.

“He who fails to plan, plans to fail!”

This is one quote that has stuck with me ever since I heard it, and it continually reminds me to stop and take check that I am constantly updating my goals.

There are two type of goals you can set:

  • SMART goals
  • Dumb goals

Here is an example of some dumb goals!

  1. I will make more money than last year from my blog
  2. I will regularly post on my blog
  3. I will make a million dollars online next year
  4. I want to grow the traffic to my blog
  5. I will spend time working on the SEO of my blog

Why are these goals dumb?

Before I can show you why these goals are dumb (if you haven’t worked it out already), I have to show you exactly what makes up a smart goal. As you may have guessed SMART is an acronym that shows you the integral parts of a smart goal.

SMART Goals

S - Specific

M - Measurable

A - Attainable

R - Relevan

T - Time Bound

Lets take a look at each of these essential building blocks individually:

  1. Specific

To make a goal specific we have to look at the 5 ‘W’s

    Why?

    What?

    Where?

    When?

    Why?

There is more chance of you being motivated by a goal that is specific as it gives you steps to achieve them not just a pie in the sky statement.

Lets look at the first of our dumb goals:

I will make more money than last year from my blog

A SMART version of this goal would be:

I will make an extra $100 a month from my blog through direct sales, affiliate promotion and Google Adsense

Now you have set a specific amount you will make which allows you to track your progress as well as the way you aim to achieve it.

  2. Measurable

You have to make sure that you can measure your goals to make sure that you have reached them, or just to keep tabs on how you are traveling with them.

If you cannot measure your goal, you cannot manage your goal

To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as……How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?

  3. Attainable

The reason I threw in the following dumb goal:

I will make a million dollars online next year

Is because I see a lot of new bloggers make statements like this - maybe not as big, but that is just it. They just pluck a number out of the air that they would like to make but we all know there is no chance that they will make it. Not because they can’t, but because of they way they have set their goal.

If you can explain how you will make the million dollars they maybe I will give you the benefit of the doubt. If you can make it specific and measurable, then maybeI will think you have a small chance of making it. Just don’t set goals that just pluck a figure out of the air just for the sake of having a goal.

  4. Relevant

When you are looking at planning your long and short term goals is there a link between the two? Do your goals parallel each other? Make sure each goal is consistent with other goals you have established and fits with your immediate and long-term range plans.

  5. Time Bound

It is no use having a specific and attainable goals if you do not give yourself a time frame to complete them within.

I will spend time working on the SEO of my blog

Looking at this goal it doesn’t really motivate you at all. I would change it to something similar to this:

I will write 1 keyword targeted articles and comment at least 2 new blogs each day for the next 30 days

This type of goal is so much easier to attain because each day you can go ‘Ok, I need to write one article and comment at least 2 new blogs each day’ and it gives you something to do to complete your goal. Instead of just an airy statement about spending time on working on your SEO.

So when you start looking at setting goals for 2008, make the SMART choice and set SMART goals!
